Three Caribbean Cocktails to Try at Home
The Caribbean islands are notorious for their happy hours, local drinks, and of course the infamous "island pour". Below are some of the greatest cocktails the USVI has to offer- that you wouldn't order in the States or anywhere else in the world!
Enjoying killer views at beach bars and dancing along to reggae is a past-time, but wouldn't be without ordering one (or many) of these 3 island drinks. These drinks were invented in the USVIs and BVIs, soon becoming world renowned and a must-try.
The Painkiller
The rum drink that melts away all of your worries. Originally invented at the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke- and now available all over the Caribbean- this drink will rock your world.
Ingredients: dark rum, cream of coconut, pineapple juice, orange juice, topped with freshly grated nutmeg.
The vibe at Soggy Dollar makes the experience all the better. Accessible from boat and taxi, Soggy Dollar received its name from the soggy dollars you'll have in your pocket after swimming in!
Bushwacker
After a little researching, I discovered the Bushwacker originated in St. Thomas, USVI. This frozen island drink is a deadly mix of deliciousness and potency. The Bushwacker may resemble a chocolate milkshake and you could probably drink all of it without realizing alcohol even exists inside.
Ingredients: vodka, Baileys Irish cream, coconut rum, Kahula, amaretto, Cruzan dark rum, and lastly, chocolate syrup
Once again, the Bushwacker is popular everywhere- especially Foxy's on Jost Van Dyke in the BVIs. Foxy's is a world-known beach bar, famous for its over the top New Year's Eve parties.
Benny Chesney
I came across the Benny Chesney unexpectedly, a guest ordered it for me on the island of St. John at a bar called Gringos. Kenny Chesney lives on St. John and is a regular at the local bars. The story goes that he created this drink at the Mexican restaurant, Gringos, before other bars in the area added it to their cocktail menu as well. After originally trying it, we immediately began making Benny Chesney's on our charters due to how refreshing and simple it is.
Ingredients: banana Cruzan rum, Sprite, and pineapple juice
The Benny Chesney isn't as popular as the Painkiller or Bushwacker, but believe me when I tell you, you'll be missing out if you opt out of trying this cocktail. If you are in the islands, know that this drink is named differently depending on what bar you go to. If you aren't in the islands, the Benny Chesney will surely make you feel like you are.
